In 1958, the Division of Urology at the University of Florida was established and Dr. George Miller appointed the first Division Chief.  A protégé of Nobel Laureate Dr. Charles Huggins at the University of Chicago, Dr. Miller instituted UF Urology's tradition of excellence in academics and research, having established the first research laboratory and cultivating relationships with community urologists.  Dr. Miller was succeeded in 1972 by Dr. David Drylie who continued to drive the Division's landmark progress by introducing important subspecialties, vital for the growth of an academic program, including pediatric urology, endourology, and oncology. Renowned faculty were recruited to UF Urology, including Dr. Birdwell Finlayson, who, among many other contributions, pioneered the nation's first electroshock wave lithotripsy for the treatment of kidney stones, Dr. Harry Grabstaldt and Dr. Zev Wajsman, renowned urologic oncologists, and Dr. Dixon Walker, the State's first pediatric urologist. The University of Florida's Department of Urology rededicates itself everyday to the pursuit of a culture that expects no less than the highest in quality across all the services it offers and the research it conducts. This year, US News and World Reports' annual "America's Best Hospitals" ranking designated our program as the 26th best program in the nation, up six notches from last year's 32nd. As we continue to grow, we have brought on more faculty, expanding our specialties in urologic oncology, endourology, MIS and robotic surgery and traditional urology, as well as cutting-edge research.
