Conferences & Lectures
Each week the Department of Urology holds lectures and conferences to supplement Resident & Faculty education. Below is a listing of the various lectures and topics covered and the frequency of each conference.

Monday — Pre-Op Conference — 7:00am
The first year resident and the chief resident on the Shands rotation present all planned surgical procedures for the following week, in the presence of Drs. Wajsman and Algood. The indications for surgery, diagnosis, pre-surgical procedures and the surgery itself are discussed.
Tuesday — Tumor Board — 7:00am
It is the responsibility of the first year Junior Resident to present 5-7 (on average) complex cases with GU malignancies. After he/she presents the history, the Pathology Attending reviews the appropriate slides and the Radiology Fellow or Attending describes the logical diagnostic procedure. A general discussion ensues during which the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Oncologist and the rest of the faculty participate. The conference is geared toward problem solving as well as a teaching exercise, during which time the Residents are asked to suggest or defend the proper management of the cases. The Chief Resident usually describes the operative procedure when indicated. All Residents — on the VA and Shands rotation — are required to attend.
Wednesday — Grand Rounds — 7:00am
Continuing medical education, consisting of presenting the medical problems and treatment of a particular patient to an audience consisting of doctors, residents, and medical students. These lectures are given by the residents, urology attendings, and visiting scholars on selected topics. Frequently, a resident will give a lecture and the faculty will provide comments and conduct random tests on the residents' preparation for the lecture.

IVP Conference — 5:30pm
All of the residents and faculty are usually present. A resident from each service presents a case to the other residents. The resident in the "hot seat" is expected to ask the appropriate questions in order to reach the correct conclusion. Faculty members direct the questions and provide comments on management. This conference is frequently done in quiz form for a radiologic diagnosis and/or management. It is the resident's responsibility to provide a proper presentation and to provide a full radiologic interpretation. The faculty member for each service is responsible for the case presented and for providing comments.

Morbidity & Mortality Conference — 7:00am
All complications, from each service, are presented and discussed by the Residents on the second year service or by the Chief Resident. Following the discussion, one of the faculty members serves as a moderator. All of the major surgical cases in a given month are listed and, in addition to specific cases involving a complication, any case can be discussed.
Radiology Conference — 7:00am
Dr. Patricia Abbitt, an Attending Radiologist, presents interesting cases related to GU Radiology to both the Radiology and Urology Residents. This is often done in quiz form and the Residents are asked to describe the findings. Dr. Abbitt provides the teaching experience and Dr. Zev Wajsman is often in attendance as well.
Teaching Rounds — 7:15am
It is a combination of working and formal teaching rounds. The patients are presented by the junior resident and/or the rotating students and questions are generated by the attending. All complications, from each service, are presented and discussed by the residents on the second year service or by the chief resident. All of the major surgical cases in a given month are listed and, in addition to specific cases involving complication, any case can be discussed. The corresponding faculty member is in charge of discussing cases pertaining to his/her service.
Urology Journal Club — 6:30pm
This meeting provides an opportunity for social interaction among the faculty and residents. The topics are chosen by the chief resident with the approval of the faculty members. Each resident is assigned a topic to discuss from the Journal of Urology, Urology, New England Journal of Medicine and Cancer. Periodic testing of material is provided.

• Basic Science Clinical Conference — Two PGY-3 Jr. Residents attend
Our residents have the opportunity to travel to any meeting where their research is being presented. The cost of these trips is covered by the department. Additionally, nearly all residents go to the Florida Urologic Meting, which is one of the highlights of the year.
