This year, US News and World Reports' annual "America's Best Hospitals" ranking designated our program as the 26th best program in the nation, up six notches from last year's 32nd. As we continue to grow, we have brought on more faculty, expanding our specialties in urologic oncology, endourology, MIS and robotic surgery and traditional urology, as well as cutting-edge research. Join our team, become a UroGator and carry the torch as a UF Urologist with pride!
The University of Florida Department of Urology has undergone significant change since its inception as a division of the Department of Surgery in 1958. 2006 ushered in a new era of expansion as our onetime division transitioned to a departmental status. With this change our full time faculty component has increased with a subspecialty expertise in oncology, endourology, minimally invasive surgery (robotics), infertility, stone disease, erectile dysfunction, prosthetics and most recently, urogynecology.
Our clinical and research opportunities primarily, in urooncology and stone disease have similarly increased achieving national and international prominence.
The urology residency program has always been a critical component of our department. Just as our department is committed to the highest quality patient care and best practice, the faculty of the University of Florida Department of Urology is committed to training our residents to be the best physician-surgeon they can be. Working with our residents as colleagues and instilling an ethic of life-long learning is at the heart of our mission. It is said that “training begins with a task and learning begins with a question”. In this program, you will find both in abundance. We hope you find this website useful in learning more about our program and our passion teaching.

Residents are selected based on their academic achievement, personal qualities and ability to excel in the rigors of surgical education. For the most part, only those most qualified applicants from LCME schools that faculty considers as providing a superior undergraduate medical education will be interviewed. Resident applicants submit their applications to the department through the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS). All applications are reviewed by the residency program director and urology faculty members of the Urology Residency Review Committee.

Rotations are performed across multiple facilities that include but not limited to Lake City VAMC, UF Shands, Gainesville VAMC, Nemours Children’s Clinic or the Wolfson Children’s Hospital. In accordance with ACGME guidelines, the urologic resident spend a minimum of one year in PGY-I rotations related to general surgery. A minimum of three months on general surgery rotations are combined with rotations of two months in critical care as well as one to two month rotations on vascular surgery, plastic surgery, trauma surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery and urology. These rotations are meant to create a strong foundation in general surgical / critical care knowledge, skill sets and an introduction to urology. It is purposely broad to enable the burgeoning urologic resident to develop the necessary clinical and technological skills to deal with a wide range of patients and medical conditions. Thereafter, rotations are divided into four levels of competencies – URO-1 (PGY-II), URO-2 (PGY-III), URO-3 (PGY-IV) and URO-4 (Chief Resident, PGY-V).
