Tom Stringer, MD, Associate Chair of the UF Department of Urology, Executive Director of the UF Prostate Disease Center and the Florida Prostate Cancer Advisory Council, explains the new national prostate cancer screening guidelines, which now states, men ages 55-69 should “make an individualized decision about prostate cancer screening with their clinician”. This differs from the previous blanket recommendation in 2012 for no routine screening at any age.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), submitted these new guidelines after analyzing the potential benefits and harms of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.
The Florida Prostate Cancer Advisory Council was recently tasked by the Florida Legislature to create state guidelines for early detection of prostate cancer.
