A Message from Dr. Tom Stringer, UroGators President

---

Greetings to our UroGator family far and wide:

At UF Urology, we strive to adjust to the new normal in our practice and community just as many of you continue to do so. Resident education has mostly returned to normal with the exception of too many Zoom meetings. I know many of you are on the front lines in this ongoing battle for the safety of our patients and our families. We laud your efforts. You are in our thoughts daily despite the reality of less time face to face. Hopefully the annual routine of UroGator/UF celebrations including the AUA reception, homecoming visiting professorship and graduation ceremony will return in the not too distant future.

An entire era of UroGators were directly impacted by the teachings of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson.  The full impact extended to our careers and to our personal lives. The UroGators are in the midst of a campaign to raise sufficient philanthropic funds to fully support the endowed professorship in his name. This was initiated with a personal letter in August to all residents and fellows that trained under him. In truth, Birdwell positively impacted even subsequent generations of residents by enhancing the reputation of UF Urology nationally and internationally. So my message to financially support the named professorship  would extend, in part, to all UroGators. In the few short months since the campaign began, generous UroGators have already contributed nearly half our goal of $240,000. I would ask the rest of you to reflect on your time in Gainesville and the training you received to be part of the fundraising effort. The result will be an immortalization of a pioneer in urology at UF and the continuation of essential ongoing education in his name.  For more information, please see "Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson" section below.

As always, I am proud of our organization and the honor that you have bestowed on me as your president. As a group, we will continue to be the patron of education for our trainees, to promote the department and to strive to network across the generations of UroGators.

Best,

Thomas F. Stringer, MD
UroGators President
Associate Chair of Philanthropy and Alumni Affairs, Department of Urology

A Message from Dr. Li-Ming Su, UF Urology Chairman

To UroGator alumni and friends of UF Urology:

I hope that you all remain healthy and safe during these uncertain times. Despite the challenges that we all face with the COVID-19 crisis, the department continues to thrive with clinical volumes exceeding last year numbers despite the pandemic.  I am pleased to inform you that our national prominence and recognition continues, coming off of our #17 ranking by US News and World Report. We are attracting top tier candidates, for our open faculty lines as well as residency applicants, from across the nation. We celebrate the return of Russ Terry, MD who was a former graduate of our program who recently completed an endourology and minimally invasive fellowship at Duke University. He will be joining our endourology team in pursuing new technologies and innovation and providing clinical care both at the Shands and VA hospitals. Furthermore, we are expecting to add a male infertility as well as an oncology faculty member to our roster by next year, which will nicely round out our faculty compliment in providing full service subspecialty urologic care.

As always, it is great to be a UroGator. Please take care and be safe.

Li-Ming Su, MD
David A. Cofrin Professor of Urologic Oncology
Chairman, Department of Urology

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson

---

In late August, many received a letter from me asking to join us in helping pay tribute to the tremendous memory of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson.

The letter was mailed to residents and fellows who trained under Dr. Finlayson. Several of you responded and made significant philanthropic gifts in support of the Birdwell Finlayson, MD, PhD, Research Professorship. We want to thank and recognize you – Dr. Stringer, Dr. John Burns, Dr. Greg Oldani, Dr. Stephen Allen, Dr. Camp Ferguson, Dr. Greg Steinbock and Dr. Raleigh Rollins. Lastly, the recently deceased Dr. Tom McLaughlin left UF Urology in his estate and $20,000 will go toward the Finlayson Research Professorship.

The goal is to have the professorship fully endowed at $1 million by June 30, 2021. Donors have made gifts to this fund dating back to the early 90s. We are about $110,000 short of reaching $1 million. Once we reach our goal, we will then be permitted to recruit and hire a physician-scientist to this prestigious professorship.

If you want to make a gift today online, go to the following link: https://www.uff.ufl.edu/giving-opportunities/005987-birdwell-finlayson-m-d-ph-d-research-professorship/.

Also, please feel free to call Ted Kruljac, Senior Director of Development for Urology, at (352) 538-6267. You can also email him at kruljt@ufl.edu. He can assist you through the gift-giving process.
