Male Reproductive Medicine, Andrology & Men’s Health Fellowship

One-year fellowship | One fellow per year | Gainesville, Florida

Program Overview

The University of Florida Male Reproductive Medicine, Andrology & Men’s Health Fellowship is a one-year advanced training program designed to prepare urologists for comprehensive clinical practice in male reproductive medicine, sexual medicine and genitourinary prosthetic surgery.

The fellowship combines high-volume clinical and operative experience with multidisciplinary reproductive care, structured academic development and graduated clinical autonomy. Training encompasses male infertility and reproductive microsurgery, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, testosterone and hormonal management, ejaculatory and orgasmic disorders, and prosthetic management of erectile dysfunction and male urinary incontinence.

Fellows train alongside faculty with complementary fellowship backgrounds in male reproductive medicine, sexual medicine and genitourinary reconstruction, providing broad exposure to both reproductive and prosthetic urology.

Clinical Training

Male Reproductive Medicine & Microsurgery

Fellows receive comprehensive training in the evaluation and management of male infertility, including both medical treatment and advanced reproductive microsurgery.

Clinical and operative experience includes:

  • Male infertility evaluation and hormonal management
  • Microsurgical varicocelectomy
  • Vasectomy reversal, including vasovasostomy and epididymovasostomy
  • Microdissection testicular sperm extraction
  • Management of obstructive and nonobstructive azoospermia
  • Ejaculatory duct obstruction
  • Fertility preservation
  • Chronic orchialgia and microsurgical denervation of the spermatic cord

Microsurgical education incorporates didactic instruction, video review, simulation and progressive hands-on operative training. Fellows have access to modern operative microscopy and dedicated microsurgical instrumentation.

Sexual Medicine & Peyronie’s Disease

Fellows gain experience in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of male sexual dysfunction, including:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Penile prosthetic surgery
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Ejaculatory and orgasmic disorders
  • Penile duplex Doppler ultrasonography
  • Intracavernosal injection therapy
  • Intralesional treatment for Peyronie’s disease
  • Penile plication
  • Plaque incision/excision and grafting

Training emphasizes patient selection and progression from medical and office-based therapies to reconstructive and prosthetic surgical management.

Genitourinary Prosthetics

UF provides substantial exposure to prosthetic urology through UF Health and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

Operative training includes:

  • Inflatable & malleable penile prostheses
  • Artificial urinary sphincters
  • Adjustable continence devices
  • Testicular Prostheses

Hormonal & Men’s Health

Fellows develop expertise in the evaluation and longitudinal management of testosterone deficiency and other hormonal disorders relevant to male reproductive and sexual health, including management of men in whom preservation of fertility is an important consideration.

Clinical Experience & Case Volume

The fellowship is supported by a growing tertiary referral practice in male reproductive medicine, sexual medicine and genitourinary prosthetics.

Current annual clinical experience includes:

  • More than 100 male reproductive microsurgical cases
  • More than 100 genitourinary prosthetic procedures
  • More than 500 office vasectomies
  • Additional office-based sperm retrieval procedures, penile Doppler ultrasonography, intracavernosal injection teaching and intralesional therapy for Peyronie’s disease

The fellow participates progressively in operative cases throughout the year, with increasing responsibility and autonomy based on experience and demonstrated proficiency.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship is designed around complementary clinical experiences with the program’s core faculty while maintaining flexibility to pursue individual areas of interest.

A typical week includes approximately:

  • 2 operative days
  • 1 combined faculty/fellow clinic
  • 1 independent clinic or operative day
  • 1 dedicated research day

Additional time may be concentrated in male infertility, testosterone management, Peyronie’s disease, erectile dysfunction, genitourinary prosthetics, or male urinary incontinence based on the fellow’s educational goals.

Multidisciplinary Reproductive Medicine

Male fertility care at UF is integrated with specialists in reproductive endocrinology and infertility and with the Andrology and IVF laboratory.

Fellows gain experience in the multidisciplinary evaluation of the infertile couple and develop an understanding of semen analysis, assisted reproductive technologies, sperm retrieval strategies and the interaction between male reproductive treatment and female reproductive care.

This experience is intended to prepare graduates not simply to perform reproductive procedures, but to understand when and how male-directed therapy fits into the overall reproductive plan for a couple.

Research & Academic Development

Academic development is an integral component of the fellowship.

The fellow receives dedicated research time and mentorship with opportunities to participate in clinical, translational and collaborative research. Fellows are expected to develop a research project with fellowship faculty and carry the project through presentation and preparation of a manuscript suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Additional opportunities include participation in investigator-initiated, cooperative-group and industry-sponsored clinical research.

The fellow also participates in the department’s broader academic environment and is encouraged to collaborate with and mentor urology residents and medical students.

Conferences & Teaching

Fellows participate in departmental and subspecialty educational activities throughout the year, including:

  • Andrology research conference
  • Reconstructive, infertility and men’s health case conference
  • Urology Grand Rounds
  • Departmental case conference and board review
  • Quality assurance and quality improvement conference

As experience progresses, the fellow assumes increasing responsibility for leading andrology research and clinical case discussions and participates in the education of residents and medical students in both the clinic and operating room.

Fellows are encouraged to participate and submit projects to national meetings in reproductive and sexual medicine including ASRM and SMSNA.

Training Environment

Clinical training occurs across the University of Florida Health system and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, providing exposure to complementary patient populations and practice environments.

Operative microsurgical training is supported by contemporary operative microscopes and dedicated microsurgical instrumentation across UF Health surgical facilities.

The fellowship is part of an established academic Department of Urology with longstanding residency and fellowship training programs and opportunities for collaboration across the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Living in Gainesville

Gainesville offers the resources and energy of a major university community while maintaining the accessibility and quality of life of a smaller city.

Home to the University of Florida, Gainesville combines college athletics, restaurants, arts and cultural events with year-round outdoor recreation. North Central Florida is known for its natural springs, trails and state parks, while Gainesville’s location provides convenient access to destinations throughout Florida.

For a one-year fellowship, the city offers an especially manageable environment in which to balance intensive subspecialty training with life outside the hospital.
