As prostate cancer is the most common genitourinary cancer treated by a urologist and by far the most visible cancer from the standpoint of public awareness, our UF Health Urology team members are doing their part to increase awareness of this challenging disease by wearing a light blue ribbon lapel pin throughout the month of September. What Are Some Important Facts and Statistics About Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer represents the most common solid organ cancer in US men and the third leading cause of cancer death after lung and colorectal cancer. Approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime with a majority (>60%) being diagnosed in men 65 years or older and the mean age being 66 years old. It is very uncommon to be diagnosed below 40 years old. It is estimated that there will be 288,300 new cases of prostate cancer and 34,700 deaths from prostate cancer in 2023. Overall, about 1 man in 41 will die of prostate cancer. Which Men Are At Highest Risk of Developing Prostate Cancer? African-American men and Caribbean men of African ancestry. Men with a family history of prostate cancer, especially multiple first-degree male relatives. Men with a known family history of high-risk germline mutations that predispose them to prostate cancer (i.e BRCA1/BRCA2) These high risk men are recommended to undergo screening from 40-45 years of age The 2023 American Urological Association guidelines supports that clinicians may begin screening men at average risk of developing prostate cancer and initiate a baseline PSA screening blood test starting between 45-50 years of age, following a shared decision making process. Furthermore, men should be offered regular PSA screening at 2-4 year intervals from 50-69 years of age. Please feel free to ask any of our team members about screening recommendations, prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment options, and join our team in spreading awareness of this important and very common disease.
