UF Urology at the 2021 Florida Urological Society

The 73rd Annual Meeting of the Florida Urological Society was held at the Sea World Orlando Renaissance Hotel, December 10-12. It was a uniquely invigorating, refreshing and entertaining meeting from both a social and academic perspective. For many of those in attendance, it was the first interactive in-person meeting in nearly two years. Current and past UF residents and faculty members with their families converged on the resort to celebrate the spirit of the UroGators. Celebratory events included the multi-institutional hotly contested Victor Politano resident debates with PGY-3 Dr. Mike Maidaa placed third and PGY-3 Dr. Marc Abboud coming in first in the competition. Congratulations! We are very proud of our residents including PGY-3 Dr. Brian Wiseman who competed admirably in the Milton Copeland pyelogram event.

Additionally, this was a homecoming for many to celebrate the awarding of the FUS Lifetime Achievement Award to our faculty member Dr. Tom Stringer.  The award was created by the FUS to recognize an individual who has performed outstanding service and accomplishments spanning a career in urology. The goal is to recognize a track record of achievements that are truly extraordinary and of positive and lasting quality. Dr. Stringer was introduced for the award by fellow faculty member and his co-resident Dr. Michael Wehle. A reception was hosted by Dr. Su that evening to honor Dr. Stringer and included former partners from his 30 year career in private practice. US Congressman Dr. Neal Dunn was also in attendance and recognized Dr. Stringer in a speech. The FUS Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented only six times in the past including former UF faculty and UroGator Dr. Zev Wajsman in 2016. Dr. Stringer said that he was emotionally prepared for a roast but not the lengthy tribute that came from his current and former residents, faculty, colleagues and family at the reception. “I am very gratified and humbled to be recognized by the FUS and to hear the heartfelt comments of so many”, Dr. Stringer said. Dr. Stringer currently serves as president of the UroGators, Vice-Chair of Philanthropy and Alumni Affairs for the Department of Urology and Treasurer of the AUA.
